Seongju residents have protested against the government’s unilateral decision to install the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) at the Seongsan artillery base in the county. THAAD is used to find out about enemies’ weapons by using X-band radar and it can make Korea more secure against attacks from other countries. However, the biggest problem with the THAAD deployment is that the location is problematic for local residents because their health will be threatened if they are constantly exposed to electromagnetic waves released from this high-tech weapon. Therefore, the government should have given enough explanation to the residents in the prearranged area, and suggested kinds of solutions to protect them. I think the dispute over the THAAD deployment in the county will continue until the government persuades the residents of the THAAD deployment location to agree by communicating with them.
