NIS Hacking Investigation

Cho Young-hyun
(Senior, Dept. of Energy & Resource Engineering)
Up until this time, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) has rejected a parliamentary investigation of suspicions that it carried out hacking on Korean citizens. There have been fierce confrontations between the ruling party and the opposition to deal with this problem because the ruling party also has no intention of investigation the NIS hacking case. The NIS has stuck to its policy that it would not submit six materials including log data that the opposition party requested in order to inspect the case without proper reasons and exact answers to the suspicion-related questions. The government’s strong will is needed to resolve the spy agency hacking scandal and the people’s anxiety of being surveilled by the NIS. In addition, the governing party should actively cooperate with the opposition party if they sincerely respect national security and civil rights. Furthermore, in order to reveal the truth and to prevent the recurrence of such cases from now on, there is an urgent need for an institutional strategy and systematic complementation.

Lawmakers’ Graft and Bribery Scandal

Hong Min-pyo
(Junior, Dept. of English Language and Literature)
Recently, some incumbent members of the National Assembly abused their power to improve their children’s chances of employment. Actually, it is not a surprising issue because we often hear this kind of corruption and graft by the privileged. Powerful people find it easy to have unfair advantages by abusing their power in our society. We know it is not easy to prevent these problems. Nevertheless, we have to inhibit the abuse of power because it steals other peoples’ opportunities. One qualified person could lose his or her chance because of a child of the privileged. Our society seems to underestimate the negative influences caused by nepotism. Eventually, the recent scandals could be forgotten easily as regarding them as just small happenings. However, the one thing we should keep in mind is corruption starts from ignoring small irregularities.
