The Chonnam Tribune asked international students for their opinions about Korean culture. Let’s listen to what they said.
What do you think about Korean boys? Their appearance, manner, fashion style, etc.
Valentina Popova (Russian), Korean Study major, Department of Foreign Affairs: They are always good looking and try to do their best on that way. I think an average Korean guy pays really big attention to the way he is dressed and what perfume and hairstyle he has. A bit hard to say something on the Korean boy manner as it really depends on the person itself.
Has your experience at CNU or Korea in general helped you communicate better within and among diverse cultural groups? If so, can you cite specific examples?
Rahmadani Cahyaningtyas (Indonesian), International Relations major, Department of Political Science: Yes, being in Korea especially at CNU definitely changed my perspective in life. For example, being able to understand a little of hangeul and the culture too.
What about your country do you think would surprise Koreans the most?
Will Hall (English), Business major, Business Administration Department: In the U.K., the first floor is known as the ground floor and the second is the first. The U.K. has four seasons unlike Korea. Koreans always go on about how they have four seasons so I thought I would string them along as a joke.
So you speak Korean. What kind of advantages and disadvantages because of your fluent Korean speaking?
Jestril Ebaga Ololo (Gabonese), Energy & Resources Engineering major: Well I think speaking has brought more advantages than disadvantages. Because of my Korean abilities I have been able to meet a lot of friends and become much closer to them. When a Foreigner is able to speak Korean among Koreans, he becomes a kind of star. I have had my lunch paid several times because of that. I have also learned a lot of things concerning Korea told by taxi drivers which I didn't know before.
