The Chonnam Tribune asked a student for his opinion about removal of Hong Sung-dam’s painting from a special exhibition of the Gwangju Biennale. Let’s think about the issue whild reading his opinion.

"I believe in a freedom of expression should be guaranteed. But in the case of the removal of some artists’ artworks from a special exhibition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gwanjgu Biennale, I think the artists should have thought of the situation of the biennale that it was impossible to display good artworks anymore if the government might cut the budget for the biennale. The artist Hong Sung-dam’s ”Sewol Owol” put the biennale event in trouble with the government. He probably could display the painting at another exhibition in order to express his opinion about such a sensitive problem, but he tried to display his work at the international event. I understand the artist Hong’s intention but I personally think it was inappropriate because he could have made the situation worse and the biennale, one of the most famous international events in Gwangju was almost not held this year."
