The stories about people who fight against unfairness have been on the news for the last few months. These kinds of news stories have been the most visible to me because usually people do not really make an effort to change unfair situations. If people aren’t affected by the problem they usually don’t care. If they are affected, often they feel powerless to try to change it because that’s just the way it is. There were two articles about change that were very impressive, the heating bill and the snack pack issues.
The issue of heating bill corruption, which the celebrity Kim Bu-sun brought up, hit the headlines. To support her opinion, she uploaded the details of the amount of money that each house had paid for the past few years. Some of them paid nothing for the heating for years but she was the only one who made the situation an issue. She directly fought against the unfairness by making documents available to the public and giving interviews with the media.
On the other hand, there are people who fight indirectly but in their own ways. Last September, a group of university students made a boat with 160 unopened snack packets and rowed across the Han River to prove that snack packets contains too much nitrogen. People often make fun of snack packs saying ”I bought a pack of nitrogen and snacks were in it!” and these university students put those ideas into action, hoping their experiment send a message to the companies that make snack packs. Some people might think these actions are pointless if nothing changes, but I personally think that what they are trying to do is very meaningful whether it works or not.
When I thought about myself, I realized that I complain about things that do not feel right but I am not actively trying to change it. I help people who try to change it by signing certain campaign petitions or donating money but I do not have the courage to fight against unfairness. Most people are probably like me and maybe that is why we give so much attention to people who raise their voice to change the unfairness. However, we cannot lean on other people to fight for our own sake. We will probably face unreasonable systems, situations or many other things in our life and we need to have the courage and wisdom to change them. The process could be annoying, irksome and even difficult enough to put you in trouble but I am telling you it will be worth it to put your effort and time into it.
As a university student, we often hear and see something that is not fair. It could be the system or the pressure to follow so called traditions and many others. I propose to you to think about it and try to find a way to change it for the better. Hand written posters are usually one of the most popular ways to get attention. A one-person pretest could be another option as well. If you think it is too aggressive for you, you can choose your own way to help other people realize why it has to change. Coming up with a witty solution like what students did with the snack packs could be a good idea. There is not an absolutely fixed method to bring attention to the issues and change it for the better. Do you feel something is not right? Do not hide and wait for others to change it for you! Face it and try to do something, and then you will realize it is not as scary as you thought.
