CNU operates various reading programs such as the Library’s Reading Club and “Dadok-Dadok” from the Center for Teaching and Learning. Some departments promote students to submit book reports for graduation requirement instead of a graduation thesis or examination. Among the programs, Dadok-Dadok participants, by grouping four to five members with one professor, must read three books including two among reading recommendation lists by the center. This aims to make students read more good books and broaden their horizons by discussing and hearing the professor’s explanation for a better understanding. They select reading books by two stages. First, each Dadok-Dadok member chooses what they want to read, and then, professors from each college through decide with the Book Selection Committee. It has a balance between many genres such as economy, science, society, history, art, and technology. Kim A-yun (Researcher of Center for Teaching and Learning) said, “By reading various genres of books and debatable books, this program provides general learning and many chances to discuss a certain topic with students to help them become cultivated people.”
Nowadays, students are busy finding employment and they hardly read classic books compared to popular self-help books which help with getting a job. Maybe it is hard to ignore the current atmosphere, but as university students, we need to be more cultured people through reading various kinds of books. According to the survey conducted in the first semester of this year, 92 percent of the Dadok-Dadok participants replied this program helped them to cultivate themselves and 87 percent of them said they could increase their volume of book reading. Also, 80 percent of them said they could improve their speaking and discussion skills. Through this program, CNU and the participating students expect to be more cultivated. This semester 62 groups consisting of 337 people including each professor taking charge, participate in the reading and learning program.
