Director Choi Byung-chul explains the engine systems of a vehicle to a student
The Automotive Research Center (ARC) was established in 1995 by a couple of mechanical engineering professors at Chonnam National University (CNU) who shared the ultimate goal of making CNU and Gwangju become a hub of automotive technology. In order to achieve the goal, the center has three main purposes of playing a critical role of leading the innovational technology in automotive industry, connecting CNU and automobile manufacturing companies in local areas, and developing the infrastructure for future automotive technology.
The ARC has been focusing on high technological automotive research in terms of IT cars, Smart cars, and Green cars. In order to initiate those above primary projects, they have tried to hold international forums and seminars with Gwangju Metropolitan City. For instance, last year, The 2012 Green Car Symposium’ at Kimdeajung Convention Center, and this year, they are going to host a big alternative energy seminar at CNU. Mechanical engineering students will attend the academic event and have remarkable opportunities for their research. Likewise, the center endeavors to support its community members and students for their successful research and employment.
Currently, the ARC has been taking a significant role in the automotive industry in Gwangju. Director Choi Byung-chul (Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering) said, “Gwangju has recently been transforming from a consumption-based industry to a manufacture-based industry, especially automobile and automobile component industries. Along with the vision of the city, ‘One Million Automobile Manufacturing City’, the role of the ARC has been increasing, as the No.1 automobile research center in the region.” In the near future, the CNU ARC is expected to be one of the most influential research centers in the automobile files in Korea.
