Dental service in Yangon, Myanmar

The domain of social contribution activities of Chonnam National University (CNU) is becoming globalized. The School of Dentistry and Medical School have provided medical services for almost 10 years. In the case of the global volunteering team of Dentistry, team members demonstrated a live surgery of reconstructing the lower jawbone with microsurgery. And they handed down the advanced operation, for example, cleft lip, cleft palate and tooth implant to local dentists. As far as the medical volunteering team, especially, orthopedics-centered services that started in 2004, there have been almost 200 patients with cerebral palsy and congenital malformation operated on. Their services are so reputable that more than 40 surgeries were reserved before their arrival.
The CNU Hospital members visited the Kurmitola Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh for 6 days, from September 28th to October 3rd, to operate on more than 100 patients who had heart disease. Members included the leader Jeong Seong-tak (Professor, Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery), medical trainees and other students whose majors were orthopedic and cardiothoracic surgery. "I felt miserable when I could not help everyone, we could treat only serious cases because of poor working conditions. I want these medical activities to be a stepping stone of 'hope' to residents with congenital heart defects and orthopedic patients." said Professor Jeong. "I cannot forget the smiling face of a 7 year-old boy named Shalman. He could not walk for 3 years due to club feet. After his feet were cured, he kept saying thank you to us." He added.
The School of Dentistry students visited Yangon, Myanmar, for dental services from February 9th to 15th, 2013. The dental team that consists of the manager Kim Sun-mi, students and other general volunteer members provided the residents with cavity checkup, scaling and cavity-treating services. Also, they carried out the training for oral health to prevent the dental caries and periodontal diseases. The local residents were most delighted when getting free tooth brushes and toothpaste that team members prepared before leaving Korea, which was an efficient way of teaching how to brush the teeth correctly. Their kind behavior has lasted for 12 years since 2002 in several countries, mainly in Myanmar and Bangladesh.
It is meaningful that both global volunteering activities of graduate schools are consistent. Like this, the social contribution activities of CNU are flying beyond local areas. CNU, as well, keeps growing in its stature beyond our regional community.
