홀로서기

Three and a half years. That's the time spent by an industrious student trying to finish his undergrad in the fastest time possible. One semester shy of a regular eight semester cycle in university. That was the time I spent with the Chonnam Tribune.
Finally leaving my desk, the interaction that happened between me and the different people that I have met through this experience will be the memento that I will keep for my own. Moreover, the strong stands of the reporters and editors that I have worked with gives me an inner calm knowing that the newspaper will be supported by a strong group of passionate students that aim to serve a bigger cause.
As the first international student to hold the title of head editor, I feel honored to have had served this post. Organizations such as the Chonnam Tribune should be flexible in the face of change. As more international students enter the gates of our university, may the term 'international' not be unique but that of the status quo. Then shall be the time that we can finally say that small efforts to affect change, including what I did, be utilized for the common good.
On a personal note, it was an opportunity for me to learn more about Korean society. It has helped me adjust and be the best that I can be while contributing to the development of the organization. The give-and-take maxim will always hold true only for those who are doing their best and trying to contribute for the better good.
One of the reporters asked me if I feel relieved and somewhat blue about leaving. My answer was clear: regrets? I have none. I know I have done the best that I can. With sincerity and passion, my final words as the head student editor for the next batch of reporters and editors is to maintain their dedication to journalism and service to the community. The growing international student population needs the Chonnam Tribune to aid them in their short stay here in Korea and the local students need to be constantly stirred-up with thought-provoking opinions to form a healthy student community.
Soon, I will be leaving Korea as well. After I graduate from our university, the time that I have spent will be no less than a memory that I will be looking back at. Almost five years have passed since I first entered the gates of Incheon and have dreamt long and far to realize my dreams. As I reach the pinnacle of my stay, I hope that every student will live a college life full of passion and have a positive attitude towards learning. Do not be afraid to try new things, volunteer, go for an exchange program, express your ideas, and interact with the people that you meet. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Beyond the passage of time, we need to remind ourselves that we need to make the best out of the borrowed time that we have.
