It showed that students of Chonnam National University (CNU) have a high level of satisfaction with its convenient facilities. CNU has a variety of educational and convenient facilities for its students including libraries, laboratories, residence halls, and student union buildings. The main users are CNU students, of course, but how satisfied are they with the facilities they are using?
According to the results of the Student Satisfaction Surveys conducted in 2012 and 2013, the level of student satisfaction with the facilities has been improved. Comparing the figures from two surveys, the numbers of respondent of ‘very unsatisfied’ and ‘slightly unsatisfied’ went down from 8.7% to 7.4% and from 22.9% to 21.9%. On the other hand, ‘generally satisfied’ went up from 25.5% to 27.7%. Satisfaction level of Library and lecture room has been improved as well. ‘Generally satisfied’ and ‘very satisfied’ of library went up from 39.9% to 43.1% and 8.7% to 9.4%. Level of satisfaction on lecture rooms on the other hand, showed higher figure on ‘slightly unsatisfied’ on 2013 survey compared to 2012s. However, other responses showed improvement. The figure of ‘generally satisfied’ went up from 33.0% to 40.7% and in ‘very satisfied’, 5.3% to 6%. Numbers of ‘not bad’ and ‘very satisfied’ stayed in the same figure which is 38.9% and 4%. The improvement is not that impressive but still it is changing. So, what did CNU do to improve students’ satisfaction?
CNU remodeled some buildings on campus to provide its students with more convenient facilities including a training center in Jang-seong. Choi Ho-ok, manager of the Office of Student Affairs said, “The University remodeled the student center and society club room for students’ convenience. Also, with the Office of Administrative Affairs, we check facilities regularly and fix it right away if there is any problem.” He also said “We are always open for any comments from students and we will listen to them.” Jang Eun-ju (Freshman, School of Business Administration) said, “I believe the facilities at CNU are good. I saw the door of a ladies’ room broken but it was fixed after few days. If CNU keeps doing what is good for students, it will continue to improve student satisfaction.”
Some people argue that the reliability of the survey is questionable because the number of students who responded to the survey is far below from total number of students. The total number of students of CNU was 24716 in 2012 but the number of respondents was below 7000 (6919 in 2012 and 6129 in 2013) which is about 40% of all students. The authorities claim that the numbers are enough to show students’ general opinion about the university. A student affairs official Lee Gi-se said “The survey represents students because in many results, percentages from answers are approximately the same and we divide respondents into different categories such as sex, year and department. So I do not think it is a big problem.”
The University depends on students. If students speak up for their convenience and give more feedback to the university, the school life of students will be a lot better than now. Students’ satisfaction has improved but it can be improved even more! In order to make it happen, students need to be more active when it comes to suggesting an idea to CNU and watch the school if they are doing alright. When CNU and its students work together, it will go better. This survey was supervised by the CNU Students Life Counseling Center from March 4th to 22th and among 17,033 students except freshmen, 6,129 replied to the survey.
