Wheelchair lift at the Student Union Building 1

What facilities does Chonnam National University (CNU) provide to disabled students? There was a total of 31 disabled students at CNU last year and the number of disabled students has increased to 38 in 2013. According to an official Yoon Il from the Office of Student Affairs, there are 40 elevators installed in 59 buildings on the Gwangju campus, 12 elevators in 14 buildings on the Yeosu campus and only one wheelchair lift at the Student Union Building 1 for their convenient movement within the buildings on campus. However, the wheelchair lift is coated with dust. “When I tried to use the wheelchair lift in Student Union Building 1, it was out of order,” said Jeong Da-eun (Sophomore, Dept. of Family Environment and Welfare). She added that using the wheelchair lift takes too much time for distance so it would better make a slope way instead. Those elevators and a wheelchair lift are maintained by each college together with the Department of Facilities Management which handles the administration of all facilities on campus. The Supporting Center for Disabled Students also has been operating a vehicle on campus for physically challenged students so that they can move fast and conveniently during short breaks in-between classes. There are two supporting cars for the disabled at CNU, one at the Gwangju campus and another in Yeosu. At the beginning of the semester, disabled students not only register for their courses but they also decide whether to take the supporting car or not during the new semester. There is a reading room also used as a counseling center for the disabled on the 3rd floor of the Main Library. However, the room is almost always empty and non-disabled people sometimes sit and use the computers in the room.
