Students do exercise for various purposes. Some go to a fitness center and do aerobic exercise to get rid of extra flab, others play basketball or soccer to promote friendship. At that time, we generally define sports as games for our health such as soccer, baseball and basketball. Now, there are extraordinary sports clubs at Chonnam National University (CNU) in which students can enjoy special sports different from ordinary ones. The Chonnam Tribune visited two clubs to find out about the club activities and their feelings.

First is the Chonnam National University Alpine Club (CNUAC). It has been 56 years since the club was established, which is an extensive history compared to other CNU sports clubs. The club members go hiking with their seniors, and constantly interact with them. CNUAC is no place to just to go hiking. They go walking, rock climbing, ice climbing and ridge, so they climb many mountains and go to extreme heights. Walking is just walking around with their travel gear in short-term or long-term. Once they had a 24-night mountain exploration. CNUAC members got the first place the National Sports Festival in women’s division, and third place in men’s division in last year. Kang Min-jun (Senior, Dept. of Chinese Lang. & Lit.) who is president of CNUAC said “Climbing is to climb a rock or ice, so if you try this, you can feel a thrill because of the height and a great view. I do this mountaineering because it makes me happy. Also, I can make precious memories and meet new people who can share my life.” They have equipment for each program, and the club room is located at the Student Union I.

The second club we researched is SEAFOX, a scuba diving club. In this club, students can enjoy being under the sea. If you dive in the sea, you will see a completely different world because it is different on the surface and under it. Not only that, if you dive in the day and at night, you will also see a different world because it is different seeing through sunlight and moonlight. In this club, students are trained at a swimming pool before they dive in the ocean. From that time, they can overcome a fear of water and learn theory and practice for scuba diving. Most members aim to be certified open-water divers themselves and go diving with their seniors. Choi Soo-hoon, president of SEAFOX, said, “You will get to know how amazing our world is, pluck up your courage and take up the challenge!”

The last club we researched is Nordic skiing club. It is small group consisting of Department of Physical Education students. Nord means northern region, Nordic skiing is a different skiing so far as we know which originated in Northern Europe like Norway. It is not only going up a hill, but also going down a slope. Jeong Ji-hoon (junior, Department of Physical Education) said, “Although it is so hard going up a slope, after I did it I can feel a sense of accomplishment.” Through interviews with the three clubs, we can know that sports give to them really many things.
