The Chonnam Tribune interviewed Lee Hak-young (Professor, Department of Biology) who is the Director of the CGE last February 18th.

The Center for General Education (CGE) was established in March 2010 to induce students to have extensive knowledge and improve creative thinking and problem solving abilities through general education courses at Chonnam National University (CNU). The center endeavors to enhance liberal general education by administering and evaluating education courses, performing basic research to develop curriculums for liberal and general education. The Chonnam Tribune visited this center located at the 7th floor of the Truth Hall and interviewed Lee Hak-young (Professor, Department of Biology) who is the Director of the CGE last February 18th.
Director Lee emphasized the purpose of general and liberal education. “General and liberal education is very important. We aim to help CNU students cultivate communication skills, critical thinking and analytical skills, understand a variety of subjects in different disciplines, and integrate knowledge and skills with culture, self-development and community spirit through general and liberal education.” Confidently, he said that CNU’s general and liberal education system is successful. “About half of CNU students actively participate in general educational programs. Also many universities have benchmarked our system, for example, core general education course.” He pointed out that the center does not have an institutional system to remove classes which had not managed for three years and educators that are not needed for reinforcing general education. “We will make a greater effort to solve this problem for better general and liberal education.”
