Employment Rate:
It Should not Be an Indicator to Evaluate a University

The Chonnam Tribune interviewed Professor Park Goo-yong (Department of Philosophy) about the social role of the university and the low employment rate for graduates from local universities. - Ed.
Professor Park Goo-yong, said, “The University as a center of academy is a place of education and study. It is the place where students put their efforts into a field of study and are educated properly from their professors. At the same time, the employment issues are an important matter as well. The university life experience shows students options for what they are going to do for the rest of their lives.” He emphasized that the employment rate should not be one of the main criteria for university evaluation in Korea.
The government and companies should increase jobs for youth and solve the problem of youth unemployment. Universities have to cultivate qualified people for which companies are looking and develop extracurricular programs to help support students in their employment after graduation.
Professor Park said that it is hard to get a job for graduates from local universities in our society, but it is only one of the factors that influence their employment. He added that students have to overcome a groundless sense of inferiority and defeat in the first and second grades, and they should make plans for their future career early. If universities support a variety of programs that help them have strong self-esteem through their culture to help them prepare for their future early and autonomously. If this is implemented, students will be able to overcome the limitation of local universities. He emphasized that it is most important for students to figure out that they want to do with their life, and that the fundamental role of the university is education.
