2012 English Essay Contest
The Chonnam Tribune hosted the 2012 English Essay Contest over a period of four hours on November 10th, 2012. The contest was open to high school and university students living in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeonnam Province. Foreign students of English as a second language also participated in the contest. Following the format of previous years, the applicants first registered from October 8th to 31st, and submitted an essay which they wrote on the topics posted on the CNU Press and Broadcasting Center’s official website at 2 p.m. on November 10th. The award ceremony was held at 11 a.m. on November 30th.
The topics were as follows: in the High School Division, “The government recently announced a measure focusing on strengthening the punishment of assailant students, to eradicate school violence. Discipline related to school violence is recorded in student records and assailant students’ delinquency records are maintained for 10 years after graduation in the case of high school students. Some people say that it is effective for reducing school violence, but others say that this measure is a violation of students' rights. Which view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.” In the University Division, “The government recently announced a plan to ban drinking on university campuses starting early next year to reduce disturbances caused by drunk people. Some students say the ban is to stop alcohol-related accidents on college campuses and also create sound campus life. Other students criticized it for violating students’ freedom and depriving them of the chance to make their own decision about drinking. Which view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.”
