The Chonnam National University (CNU) LA Alumni Association gives back to the alma mater in a form of scholarship to the international students of CNU. Part of the “1 person, 100 dollars” campaign, this is the second time that the alumni association based on Los Angeles, California in the United States of America gave scholarship to its juniors, this time crossing national borders.
The scholarship was given to 60 foreign regular students of CNU based on academic records and financial situation. Students coming from 12 countries including China, Indonesia, Mongolia and other countries received the scholarship worth 100 USD each given last November 22, 2012 at the University Museum Auditorium. 40 of them are undergraduate students and 20 are graduate students, and they wrote letters of appreciation to the alumni association members.
The scholarship is a part of the 6,000 USD donation of the organization for the usage of CNU students, their juniors. Amongst the plans for the fund is to increase the number of opportunities for CNU students to do internships abroad. “The scholarship provides an opportunity to uplift the hardships of foreign students at CNU,” says Bbosa Deogratius (Freshman, Department of Computer Science Engineering), an international from Uganda, one of the receivers of the scholarship. “This encourages more foreign students to strive more and do their best far away from home.” On the other hand, a Chinese student from the Department of Clothing and Textiles said “I hope that the opportunity to get the scholarship will be open to all foreign students on campus and not just handpicked by the school authorities.” Professor Shin Gyeong-gu, Dean of the Office of International Affairs, in an interview, said “As the 100 USD represents the dear time spent by the alumni overseas given to international students of CNU, I will do my best to increase the support and upbringing for foreign students on campus.”
