Last October 5th, as the National Institute of Biological Resources celebrated its 34th anniversary of the declaration of the Charter for Nature Protection, Lee Hyam-bum (Professor, Division of Applied Bioscience and Biotechnology) was awarded a commendation award from the Minister of Environment. This prize is awarded to members of the academe who have made a contribution to the protection and enhancement of the environment. Professor Lee, a researcher majoring in microorganisms in the College of Agriculture, aims to develop an antimicrobial to avoid plant pathogenic microorganisms. In his acceptance speech he said that “I am very happy and honored about this prize. It is very difficult to study only one field for a long time and to be an expert studying fungus form, it takes over 10 years. So I am very proud of my job which is about classification of fungus form. I feel more sense of obligation for nature protection because of the prize.” Presently, the fungus which is studied by Professor Lee is attracting attention because of the importance of indigenous biological organisms is emphasized for fungal taxonomy and bioexploitation. Professor Lee hopes many researchers and students who are studying in this field to participate in the conservation and usage of national biological resources actively and wants to work hard and find indigenous fungus with students for a long time.
