Attending the International Joyce Conference
The 5th International Joyce Conference was held on November 10, 2012 at Gwangju Bank Hall, Yongji Hall in Chonnam National University (CNU). It is the first time that the conference opened outside of the capital city, Seoul.
Since the foundation of the the James Joyce Society in Korea in 1979, the goal of this biennial conference is for sharing the ideas about James Joyce with other people called ‘Joyceans’, who admires of Joyce or his works. Min Tae-un (Professor, Dept. of English Lag. & Lit.), the current president of the James Joyce Society of Korea, gave a warm welcoming to the audiences who came to visit Gwangju for the conference.
This year’s conference topic is about ‘Hybrid Joyce’. Professor Min explained about this title, “James Joyce was the author who accepted a racial hybridity, especially hybridity of racial Irishness.” Along with the main theme, the presenters concentrated on the connection between Eastern countries and Ireland society and cultures. Hope all the Joyceans to enjoy the conference and see more people for another conference in Gwangju again!
