Chonnam National University (CNU) has a core idea called ‘Human Creative’ to make a new leap forward in reaching its 60th anniversary. There are many student societies suitable for its purpose at CNU. The Chonnam Tribune visited ‘Green Action’(virtuous person) and the ‘Robot Research Initiative (RRI)’ (technical person) among CNU societies to learn about their activities.

Green Action: Kim Hong (Chairman, Senior, Dept. of Sociology)
Green Action, eco campus club, has made a lot of effort to counter climate change for the last three years. I met Kim Hong who is the chairman of Green Action and had a significant talk with him. Green action started with the ‘Green Start Network’ program of Gwangju city hall 3 years ago. The goal of the program was to make a ‘Green Campus’ and many students of Gwangju acted on their beliefs. Now many universities have Green action on their campuses.
The clubhas tried to change the way people regard their environment. Lots of campaigns have been in progress. ‘The Earth Hour’ which started in Sydney in March 2007 is one of these campaigns. It is a global event. Every light and other electrical appliance is turned off during Earth Hour. It is a campaign which saves energy and raises awareness about the environment.
The members of Green Action at CNU have made efforts to protect the environment in many ways. They are planning to hold an Eco film Festival. They are also going to have a performance about recycling at the end of May and hold a Garden party where they will introduce ‘the garden burger’ to students. Green Action always takes to heart ‘Be a doer, not a talker.’

Center for Robot Research Initiative: Ko Seong-young (Section Head, Researcher)
The Robot Research Initiative is a research institute which is mainly focused on robotics. They are aiming to enter into the world’s top 5 leading groups in Biomedical Micro/Nano robotics fields. RRI has studied medical robotics, especially Intravascular Therapeutic Micro robot since 2007. Micro-robots move through blood vessels for treatment of coronary artery diseases such as CTO (Chronic Total Occlusion) and thrombus. In the case of industrial robots, it has been too competitive to enter for RRI as they focus on medical robotics. Researchers and professors of the Institute have worked together passionately. RRI has a clear aim of making robots for practical use in the real world. Although the community is small, they work closely with domestic experts and also collaborate with top-leading foreign experts in connection with global research network.

President Honor Students Program
Since 2010, CNU has created the program of President Honor Students (PHS) to cultivate excellent students. The Chonnam Tribune interviewed the coordinators of the PHS program and some of its participants. Kim Sun-im (Professor, German Language and Literature, and Head of the PHS Program) remarked, “We are operating various programs, specializing in Cross-Field Lectures, Self-Activities and English Composition Lessons”. Baek Ji-min who is in charge of the practical affairs introduced the PHS program to us. The program is to be completed in three years during the student’s college days. She said, “To apply for the PHS program, students should be equipped with the good credits and English certifications.” Furthermore, the head requests CNU students to challenge various school programs. Park Jung-ah (Junior, School of Self Design Interdisciplinary and School of Psychology) mentioned the importance of public relations for the PHS program. “For me, one of the most fruitful programs was a volunteer activity. To be a PHS student makes you a superior CNU student, yet still a lot of CNU students have overlooked this program”.
